ULMPUniversité Marie et Louis Pasteur Makes a Lasting Impression With an Unprecedented Broadcast of the French Climbing Championships

On 11 and 12 May 2024, the city of Besançon was hosting the French climbing championships youth level, a flagship event in which the 323 best climbers of the country faced each other. This tournament organised by the Entre-Temps Escalade association, showcased a technological aspect never seen before, thanks to the Marie and Louis Pasteur University (UMLP, former Franche-Comté University) and its video platform Nudgis by UbiCast!

A broadcast that lives up to the event

Since 2019, UMLP has been using Nudgis to digitalise and share educational and event-related video content. The needs were ambitious for these championships: to be able to broadcast live and on replay what was happening on six different climbing routes at the same time, while offering an innovative user experience.

The STAPS team took on this ambitious challenge while relying on a cutting-edge technology installation, with the support of the university video department geared with professional equipment.

"It’s the kind of challenge that suits us well: combining our video production services with engineering, experimentation and the specific features of our own laboratories and training courses."

The Dynamic Rich Media feature, for a customised viewing experience

The exclusive « Dynamic Rich Media » format available on the Nudgis video platform brought the perfect multi-stream broadcasting experience while still being tailored to the needs of the event.

To put it simply, The Dynamic Rich Media is the possibility for internet users to be their own movie director! Users can click on the video texture of their choice (each of them corresponds to a different video source) to zoom in and focus on the area they are the most interested in.

This format has already showcased its full potential: thanks to this technology, viewers were able to access their favorite climbers directly, displaying them in full screen mode or enlarging the results panel in real time, making the experience even more engaging and personalised!

"From our first conversations with the club, we had in mind the Dynamic Rich Media feature, knowing it would allow us to offer a trustworthy, strong and significant broadcasting experience, matching with our video production ambitions for this event."

Video chaptering for an easier replay navigation

Chapters have been used to offer the audience the possibility to find a specific climber or a precise moment of the event in the replay video (climber category, podium etc.). By clicking on the chapter in the sidebar, viewers are then automatically redirected to the corresponding moment in the video.

Video branding for a more personalised experience

The software also included tailor-made video branding featuring the logos of the event’s various sponsors in order to enhance their visibility for online viewers.

A responsive design

In order to avoid any risk of frustration for viewers wishing to follow the live or the replay on a smartphone, a square format optimised for mobile phones has been implemented.

" The UbiCast philosophy is truly comfortable: the Nudgis user interface is easy to operate, beginner-friendly while still allowing more experienced users to push the customisation of the composition to the next level. It was a real pleasure to see on-site people watching the stream and clicking with undisguised pleasure on the video player to jump from one climber to another on their mobile phones!"

A winning comeback for UMLP

After reaching almost 2,000 views on live-stream, the event made a lasting impression and introduced groundbreaking innovations to the university:

  • A two-day production in « Dynamic Rich Media » format (eight hours of live coverage for the preliminary rounds on Saturday and eight hours for the finals on Sunday), a first at UMLP!
  • Two separate streams for the finals, to divide the men’s and women’s categories, each of them using a multi-camera production to offer a full immersion.

"The operation was a complete success, and the feedback was unanimous. This experience not only enriched our range of expertise, but also allowed us to meet the expectations of a community that is passionate about climbing. "

This event illustrates how technology can amplify the reach and impact of a local event, while offering an immersive and interactive experience for viewers.
